Eastern Plains Quirt, 1860 / Reportedly collected from the Carlisle Indian School, PA (1882-1885)
A wooden quirt with a lobed edge – likely procured from recycled Anglo furniture of some kind – which is decorated with light incising work. The incisions consist of a horizontally symmetrical pattern in which radiating lines emerging from a half circle, painted in alternating blue(?) and red. Tied to the quirt is a lash of braided commercial leather which has endured some slight damage, possibly mouse chewing. Affixed to the opposing end is a commercial leather wrist strap which is decorated with rectangular cut outs. A faded inscription on the body of the quirt reads, “whip”; there is an old collection sticker with a penned “16”.
