Kiowa Moccasins, 1885 / Collected by Senator Matthew Quay (1833-1904)

A pair of moccasins, constructed from a combination of rawhide, commercially-tanned and native-tanned leather. The vamps and heel seams are fringed, and the vamps are painted with red and ochre pigments. The quarters and vamp have been decorated along the seams with sinew-sewn seed beads. The beads are arranged in single lanes in which inscribed geometrics and bars sit on blue lanes.
