Kiowa Strike-a-lite, 1870
A pouch constructed out of commercial leather, fully beaded with sinew-sewn seed beads on the recto, and partially beaded with the same on the verso. The design on the recto consists of a series of curvilinear green/pink/greasy yellow/navy lanes, outlined in white and powder blue, on a crimson ground. Bordering these lanes, on the periphery of the recto panel are stepped triangles and inscribed boxes which have a similar color palette. The top flap is also beaded with similar colored diamond, outlined in white, and secured with a German Silver button. The base seam and opening flap are further accented with a row of tin cones. The drops at the base seam's corners are elongated, where twisted fringe is wrapped with pieces of German Silver. Affixed to the back of the top flap is a long woven drop comprised of braided commercial thread which terminates in tassels.
6” long and 4” wide; 12.5” long overall, not including woven ties
