This atypical blanket strip likely comes to us from Oklahoma. The symbolism on the strip consists of alternating peyote birds and feather fans. A strip like this likely would have been affixed to a commercial blanket and worn to formal occasions.
This strip demonstrates well the artistic renaissance which occurred with Southern Plains beadwork in the closing decades of the 19th century. During this time, many neighboring groups, each with its own artistic traditions, began to experiment with new designs, concepts, sewing techniques and color schemes.
This is a truly unusual and artistically visual object.
