Sioux or Arapaho Tobacco Bag, 1870

A native tanned hide bag painted and decorated with sinew-sewn seed beads. The base consists of a field with alternating blue and green bars, horizontally bisected with a red bar. The motif is bordered above and below by a lane of beadwork in which navy and white triangles oppose each other. Below the beaded section are buffalo slats wrapped with dyed porcupine quills. The quills are dyed such that two white and navy box-with-a-box motifs sit on a purple field. Beneath the quills are fringe.

28” long and 5” wide
